Territorial Seed Company catalog

New at Territorial Seed Co.

I got my Territorial Seed catalog in the mail just the other day. Last year, I ordered every seed in my garden from Territorial. While I’ve had a few issues with the bigger seed companies, Territorial has never let me down, and I love the quality of their seeds. Obviously, I was excited to see what new things they were offering this spring.

Here are a few of the new items that I want to try:

Patio Star Zucchini – It’s literally the first new item I noticed in the catalog. They describe it as half the size of a normal zucchini plant, but able to produce full-size fruit. Last summer, I felt like I was plunging into a jungle every time I had to pick the squash, so I love the idea of a half-size plant. I’m definitely going to try this.

Indigo Rose Tomato – While I am a huge fan of bright red tomatoes, this purple tomato piqued my interest. It’s the first commercially available tomato with high anthocyanin content. Anthocyanin is a naturally occurring pigment that has been shown to fight disease in humans. Health-conscious Mom said, “Oh, we need that, then.”

Dragon Radish – Remember how I love bright red tomatoes? Honestly, I love bright red anything, so naturally, the Dragon radish caught my eye. It’s a gorgeous red Chinese radish with a pure white center. It’s also elongated, so it takes up less room in the garden than round radishes. Looks delicious!

Grandma’s Pick Tomato – More bright red produce! This tomato is said to have the flavor of an heirloom – and who doesn’t love the taste of heirloom tomatoes? – with the production and disease resistance of a hybrid. Sounds like a winner to me!

Tortoiseshell Spinach – Fresh spinach in salads is fantastic, and the deeper green, the better. This spinach was the deepest green of all the spinaches on the page, and looked beautiful. It’s described as having a mild flavor, and upright leaves for easy harvest. I was hooked when I read that it has great heat tolerance.

Tomaccio Tomato – And one last tomato to round out the lot. Yes, I love tomatoes. I love fresh tomatoes, I love homemade tomato juice, and I love sun dried tomatoes. The Tomaccio tomato is a cherry tomato developed specifically for drying. They say that all you have to do is cut it in half and toss the halves in a dehydrator or an oven. What could be easier?

Full disclosure: I do not work for Territorial, nor did they ask me to write any of this. I’m just a fan. (And if anyone from Territorial happens to read this, could you consider adding Anasazi beans to your dry shelling category?)

  1. Thanks so much for writing about some of our new varieties! I will definitely look into offering the Anasazi bean in the future.

  2. SO interested in this catalog especially if you had success with their seeds. Is it very difficult to start with seeds? Generally the husband and I buy starter plants.

    • It really depends on how you want to start with seeds. You can start them in Jiffy-type pots indoors, or sow them directly in the ground a bit later. Indoor starts have to be hardened to the varying temperatures and harder light outside, which can take awhile. Direct sown seeds are easier, except you have to be very sure that what you’re weeding isn’t one of your new plants. For the most part, I just direct sow, but I’ll be experimenting some with transplanting this year, too.
